Visiting Stoke-on-Trent
Stoke-On-Trent is probably most well-known for its pottery industry, and this can be seen in both the local museums and businesses. World of Wedgwood is, as its name suggests, dedicated to the world famous Wedgwood pottery. Wedgwood is an English porcelain and fine china manufacturer based in Stoke-On-Trent and founded by the potter and craftsman Josiah Wedgewood in 1759. The tourist destination World of Wedgwood houses over 3000 artefacts including pieces dating back to the foundation of the company in 1759. It is also the site of the Wedgwood flagship store, the Wedgwood Tea Room and various on site eateries. Visitors can throw pots in the Clay Studio or paint and glaze their own piece in the Decorating Studio as well as taking a guided tour of the Wedgwood Factory and learning about the company’s fascinating history.
Other pottery manufacturers present in Stoke-On-Trent include Royal Doulton and Minton who are both based there. The Potteries Museum celebrates the local pottery tradition and exhibits many locally made ceramics alongside a WWII spitfire. Restored Bottle Kilns offer another view into the pottery history of Stoke-on-Trent.
Alton Towers is perhaps one of the UKs best known theme parks, and is located only 10 miles east of Stoke-On-Trent. In 2021 the amusement park had an estimated 1.8 million visitors. The park offers everything from adrenalin-pumping rollercoasters to family friendly rides including Gansta Granny: The Ride. The park also has hotels and a resort for anyone who wants the fun to continue.
Another hit with children is the Waterworld Indoor Swimming Complex. This indoor Aqua Park has everything from slides to a “space bowl” and hosts over 400000 visitors per year. The complex has special prices for students as well as various package deals for families.
