No writing about Nottingham would be complete without mention of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men. Steeped in folklore, and mentioned as far back as 1370, Robin Hood is known as a local hero who stole from the rich to give to the poor. Along with his companions Little John and Will Scarlet to name but a couple, Robin Hood is said to have lived in Sherwood Forest, dressed in Lincoln Green. Whilst Sherwood Forest can no longer claim to have Robin Hood lurking within its massive interior, it provides modern day visitors with miles of bike trails, walks and a modern visitor centre.
Following a 3.0 million pound transformation, Nottingham Castle which was first built in 1068 is now known as the “Jewel in Nottingham’s Crown”. Standing high on a rocky cliff the castle is known as the site of the showdown between Robin Hood and his nemesis the Sheriff of Nottingham. The castle is now home to a fantastic museum where you can soak up the adventures of Nottingham’s most famous outlaw, or learn about Nottingham’s rich history from lace making to rebellion.
Nottingham has many other sites of historical and cultural interest including a subterranean cave network known as the City of Caves. These man-made caves hewn from the local sandstone have previously been used as homes for the poor, a tannery and an air raid shelter. The Nottingham Contemporary is a free modern art gallery which has exhibits from many international artists.
Nottingham is home to over 62000 university students who attend The University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Law. The University of Nottingham is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, and is described as a truly global institution. 23% of students at the university’s main campuses in Nottingham are from overseas, as are a third of academic staff.
