Visiting Bristol
Bristol’s maritime history dates back to 1051 when it was first recorded as having been used as a seafaring port, and by the 14th century trading ships were sailing to Spain, Portugal and Iceland. The building of the floating harbour in 1809 , which was used to overcome the difficulties of a port with the largest tidal range in the world, transformed Bristol’s harbourside. For the next two centuries Bristol port continued to thrive, before being transformed into a hub for leisure and business.
Bristol Harbourside is now well worth a visit. Why not take a harbour ferry to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s SS Great Britain. Launched in 1843, she travelled between Bristol and New York, and was the world’s largest passenger ship for almost 9 years. The SS Great Britain now offers visitors the opportunity to experience the sights, smells and sounds of life onboard, or “Go Aloft” and try their hand at climbing the ship’s rigging.
Harbourside is also home to The Mathew, a replica of John Cabot’s ship that he sailed across The Atlantic in 1497 to discover Newfoundland. The Mathew is moored outside M-Shed, a free museum exploring Bristol’s social and industrial heritage through stories and objects, and is free to board whilst moored. Visitors are free to explore the ship whilst enjoying magnificent views of the water. More adventurous visitors can take a trip around the harbour or take the popular Avon Gorge Trip under the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Harbourside has a plethora of shops and restaurants, some enjoying views of the water. Popular hotels include the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel and the Radisson Blu Hotel, Bristol. Guests at the four-star Bristol Harbour Hotel and Spa can enjoy a relaxing spa experience whilst staying at a historic bank building in the heart of Bristol.
Bristol is home to 2 universities, University of Bristol, and University of West of England. With a combined student population of over 50,000, the city has a thriving student community. The prestigious UK top-10 University of Bristol is particularly popular with international students, and approximately 25% of their student population is from overseas.
