Visiting Bristol
If Bristol is synonymous with one man it is the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose most important projects were completed here. These included ambitious steamships, railways and canals, but also the spectacular Clifton Suspension Bridge, a symbol for the city that spans the River Avon at a height of 100 metres. Brunel’s ship, the world’s first great ocean liner SS Great Britain was rescued in 1970 and has been lovingly restored in Bristol. The ship is now Bristol’s top tourist attraction, and has even been voted Europe’s most welcoming museum. Onboard you can explore the ship and experience tales from the opulent living quarters of First-Class passengers and also from the cramped Steerage. With authentic sounds and smells to bring every area to life, the SS Great Britain represents a truly atmospheric experience.
Bristol is famous for its street art and graffiti and is home to the infamous graffiti artist Banksy. As you drive through the city centre prepare to be wowed by the many different styles and colours of art clothing the walls and buildings.
For visitors looking for a bird’s eye view, Bristol is famous for its hot air ballooning. You can choose from a romantic balloon ride for two, or arrange to take part in the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. This spectacular event, which is free to spectators, is Europe’s largest annual hot air balloon meeting. You can expect to see over 100 balloons floating over the city, and this is accompanied by family entertainment, fairground rides and the all important food stalls.
The University of Bristol can trace its roots back as far as a Merchant Venturers’ school which was founded in 1595, and University College Bristol which was established in 1876. The University of Bristol received its royal charter in 1909. It is a member of the impressive Russell Group and attracts students from across the globe.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay and fancy treating yourself the 5-star Berwick Lodge hotel is located on the outskirts of Bristol and only 2 miles from Cribbs Causeway, often known as “The Heart of Bristol Shopping”. Bristol city centre offers a full range of hotels to suit every pocket.
